Mid-Engine C7 Corvette Coming In 2010

At the beginning of the year we were informed, by auto journalist Peter De Lorenzo, that Chevy would be making a mid-engine C7 Corvette that would be both expensive and and have low volume. Up until now we weren’t sure that they would acctually go through with it.
Keeping the Corvette relatively inexpensive was the major obstacle for moving to a mid-engine layout. Supposedly Corvette engineers have found a way to produce a mid-engine Vette while keeping the cost reasonable, about around the price for a fully loaded Corvette Convertible today. Who knows how they’ve done it, but since Corvette faithful within General Motors would not allow the car’s price to swell, the achievement was a must for the mid-engine project to move forward.
Peter De Lorenzo had this to say: “There was serious talk of an extremely limited production mid-engined “super” Corvette (fewer than 500 units), which would be built as an adjunct program to the traditional car, but that had not been decided. That’s the way we reported it many weeks ago, and that was the assumption by many in the business as to how it was going to go down, until now.”
This brand new revolutionized vehicle has already been sent to production and is planned to be released in 2010(it seems that’s when all the good supercars are coming). We can expect to see it at the Le Mans that same year showing off.

Sure, because the price of a loaded corvette ‘vert is only slightly above the base cost of a vette coupe…Doing that wouldn’t move it out of the current demographics at all. :rolleyes:
C7 will base at
-less than- $50k or the volume will have to drop like a rock. The low price of the vette is among is largest appealling features, and the jump to basing at upper end of current verts will change that.

Again, Detroit isn’t listening to it’s customers. This “we know what you want and you’re going to buy it” mentallity put GM into bankruptcy.
It will be viewed as a Saturn Sky and destroy the vette image forever. Buy up the C-6 vettes, because they will go up in value as the last real vette.
Why is there a hood scoop if it’s a mid-engne car? Are they trying to make it still look like a real front engine vette? Cheap design!

I have owned several Corvettes’ and currently own a slightly modified 2002 Yellow C5 6 speed. I have driven my friends C6 and C6 Z06 and even though I enjoyed the changes. For the cost I still prefer my C5. As for the topic of a mid engine C7? What the H@#%$# are they thinking, I agree that they should keep the car the way that it is and keep the cost down. I am not overly impressed with the New ZR-1 mainly because the shaker hood is more of a Trans Am thing not a vette and of course the price??? Out of my league. In summary I think they could up date the body styling a little and keep the same drive train.
As I skim read through the comments on here, I saw a bunch of people typing like this “dis is a stoopid id ur all mawrawnz 4 makin diz cawr!!!!!”. Seriously, if you’re not a automotive engineer(and I doubt you are) don’t insult a car until you actually drove it. Sure this is America, and you have your freedom of speech, but don’t abuse it with your retarded remarks about an amazing car. Of course GM and Chevy have to make new cars, and new models to keep up with the other companies. IE: VW made that 12 cylinder race car(can’t think of the name) so did BMW, and Ford. It’s only about time that Chevy/GM made a super-Vette. Even though I think the ZR-1 does take that position. At any rate. The C-7 looks pretty sexy to me, and I’d love to drive one, even if it were a test drive. And keep in mind they’re making less than 500 of them. Which is less than the Saleen Focus’ coming in at 100(?). For every model made, there has to be a ’super’ version of it. Look at the Eleanor for mustangs, that was considered to be a ‘bombed’ project but people to this very day are still hunting those things down. I believe that’s how this C-7 will be in 30 ~ 40 years from now.
Also, just because YOU personally can’t afford it, doesn’t mean you should bash on an American icon.

i agree with rick. also just to clarify something a mid engine car is a car with the motor mounted between the front and rear axels. a car can be an MR with the engine in the front mounted behind the front axel. also the scoop on the hood of the corvette is one of its unique styling cues and it would still be abel to function as a cold air intake by the use of and airbox and hose. if you idiots would have read the aritcle it mid engine is going to be a special edition it didnt say the corvette C7 will be a mid engine sports car. plus corvettes arent muscle car and never were the were classified as sports cars. they were built to compete with the itiallian and british sports cars. you guys need to get your shit straight before you go talking.

corvette has always been the american muscle car. this car leads one to believe that they’re trying to make it into something acura would try to make. the 2009 zr1 can already compete with ferrari and lambo. not to mention it looks like something i would stop a door with. classic is better. low nose big rear. thats what the public likes. ie: the c5 or 6. perfection since 1953.

I have bought a new ZO6 each years ‘07-’09 and finally
got the ‘10 ZR1. If the C7 mid-engine steps up from present
power/weight of 5.2, I’ll get one. The issues are that GM
is under Fed ownership right now and their goal is electric
etc cars, not more performance cars. I suspect the C7 will
be a basic 400 hp with lots of mpg hype. But, over time, it
will evolve. The C6 has been with us awhile and it is time
to move to “next”.
Totally cool!! I’m not a big Corvette fan but they are great cars. All praise to the people who have brought back this new musclecar era! The mid engine Corvette should have some version of the new cadillac V-12 that is being developed. Make it a V-12 supercar like a Lambo, Ferrari or Aston!! Pull out all the stops!!! Oh yeah throw in the split window too!! This mid engine version Corvette should have happened to compete with the Ford GT in the early 2000’s!!! Only 500 units? Should help the dealers drive the price up even more. Bring it on baby!!!!!
I would not worry too much about it corvette faithful. It’s a limited edition so in the big scheme will mean nothing to the average vette fan.

this is what happened when GM messed with the pop-ups in C6, the pop-ups are what drives the vette shape. C6 became narrower as result and this C7 is clearly Saturn Sky.

The jury is still out for me. I would have to see the C7 in person to make a final call. In some ways it looks good. It is a change. It took me a while to get used to the C6. I like the C6-Z06 but the regular C6 is a little smooth for my taste. I have an 1982 and a 2002-Z06 hardtop. I really like the 2002 hardtop. I like the big rear end affect you get with hardtop. I would like to see how you access the engine on the C7. Any way you cut it the Corvette is the best sports car for the money. I love the V8. I took a trip last summer in my Z06 and in sixth gear at 80-MPH I got 45 MPG. Sixth gear at 80 is the sweet spot. I looked at Vipers but could never get used to the V10. It sounds like a VW to me. We will see if and when the bring out the C7.
