Thursday, December 27th, 2007
Mercedes is giving us a preview of the newly remodeled 2009 SLK – which we will be able to see better at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. The new SLK will be available to consumers in April of next year. We don’t yet have a confirmed price for it.
The 3.5-liter V6 in the SLK350 gets a boost in output to 305 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is improved with both the six-speed manual and seven-speed automatic gearboxes. The supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine in the SLK200 Kompressor receives a bump to 184 hp and 184 lb-ft. But the 5.5-liter V8 in the SLK55 AMG is carried over with no major changes.
The mid-range Mercedes SLK 280 has power boosted now manages a combined 30.4mpg with emissions reduced from 231g/km to 220g/km – a £95 reduction to £205 a year for tax. Performance figures haven’t been released but expect the SLK 200 to have a slightly quicker top speed than the 143mph it currently boasts with the SLK 280 maintaining its electronically limited top speed of 155mph, but accelerating from 0-60mph slightly quicker than 6.3 seconds.
Visual changes include a new front bumper with modified airdam and a more pronounced arrow shape to emphasize the relationship with the SLR McLaren. The rear end now features a diffuser-style lower section housing trapezoidal exhaust pipes. The exterior mirrors have LED indicators, and the choice of alloy wheels is mostly new.
