They announced their newest project this week – which is named the ST1. Sources tell us that it is equipped with a turbocharged mid-mounted and supercharged 7.0 liter V8 engine that has the ability to push out 1,104 horsepower. All of this power is pushed through a six-speed manual gearbox. We have to admit that this sounds incredible and a too god to be true.

But this is not something that has happened overnight. The company began this project in 2004 with plans to deliver the first of them in 2009. The first performance tests were finished in October. The rear wheel drive ST1 will reach 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. At least that is what people are telling us. It can reach 120 mph in under nine seconds. With that being said it is no surprise to us that the top speed is 233 mph.

Not only does this supercar have power – but it also looks awesome. For now only 15 models are schedules to go into production. Which means that it won’t be easy to spot one on the road.

At this time there is no official comment from Tesla – but it is possible that the deal is that Daimler will provide engines for the range extended WhiteStar. Daimler has always struggled to make money from Smart and the micro-car builder has a 1.0L three cylinder engine that might make a good range extender. If Daimler supplied 10,000 or so of those engines to Tesla, it could help drive down Daimler’s costs. The other possibility is that Tesla might be licensing battery management technology to Daimler, but that scenario seems less likely.

According to a Norwegian specialty car importer the Euro Tesla is supposed to have 300 horsepower with a 13,000 rpm redline. The roadster is most likely to come equipped with the drivetrain 1.5 – which is said to be available later in the production run for Tesla. The new and improved gearbox has removed a gear, will provide better cooling, and will have an upgraded power electronics module.

We are all excited to see more than just a single picture of the Tesla Roadster and are looking forward to seeing exactly what the interior looks like and how well it drives.
