Porsche Tries To Beat Nissan’s Time… Again

Porsche and Nissan are at it once again. The two automakers have been trying for more then a year to prove to consumers that they have the fastest supercars on the market. The clear winner each time has been the Nissan GT-R – but each time Porsche has claimed that the Nissan is cheating in order to stay ahead in the time.

In the past Nissan has been more then willing to have others test the car and to show everyone that they have done nothing except equip it with a better engine and chassis to make it faster then the previous model. But Porsche remains unconvinced and is trying one more time to prove that theirs will beat them.

They recently clocked the 2010 911 GT3 on the Nurburgring track in Germany. This new model has been equipped with an aspirated 3.8 liter flat six that is able to push out 435 horsepower. It also sports a track tuned chassis that helps to add to the performance and handling of the car. During testing of the supercar they timed it an 7:40 with Walter Rohrl driving.

Naturally we are all impressed with this time and even though they were not able to beat the Corvette ZR1 (which has 638 horsepower) they were confident that they had Nissan this time. However, these hopes were dashed when they were informed that the GT-R made it in 7:27.

Being the sore and speculative losers that they are they informed Motor Trend that this news was false and they believe that the best time they could achieve is around 7:56. So who do we believe this time. It seems that this drama could carry one for another year!

Recap Of The 2009 New York Auto Show

The New York Auto Show is just one of the dozens of auto shows that we love to check out. Usually we can expect to see new concepts that will blow our minds (or make us bored) and check out a few models that we have heard about but have not yet had the pleasure of seeing up close yet.

Unfortunately Lamborghini, Ferrari, and Rolls Royce had backed out of the show in advance which meant that there were less supercars to check out. However, there were still a few that did not fail to impress. Without the biggest competition at the show the runner ups were able to get more show time in.

One of the first of these cars that was debuted to the public was the NISMO 370Z at the Rockefeller Center. This is quite a stage for such a stunning car. This supercar is similar to the 350Z and is equipped with a 3.7 liter V6 engine that can push out 350 horsepower. It also comes with 19” lightweight alloy forged wheels and a specially tuned suspension. Nissan will be ready to put this model on sale in June of this year.

Also we caught a glimpse of the Spyker Aileron and the Bentley Supersports. The new SMS Challenger 570 series took this time to launch it for the first time. They looked great even if there were a few parts missing underneath the hood. Some of the other supercars that showed up were the 57 Zeppelin, E63 AMG, Fisker Karma, Koenigsegg CCXR, 911 GT1, and the BMW X5M.

Nissan GT-R Improves With Updated Launch Control

Nissan has updated the software that is used for their GT-R’s launch control and everyone is talking about it. The automaker was telling all of the dealers to reprogram each vehicle in their inventory with the brand new software that had not yet been sold and to keep the extra transmission from grenading.

These changes will limit the RPM maximum that the vehicle can withhold with the VDC on the off position to 3,500. This is a big decrease from 4,500 that was offered in the older program. However, the new software will update the newer and safer form on launch controls that allows the car to takeoff at 3,000 rpm while the VDC is on.

Because of this people are asking Nissan whether or not these updates will hinder the performance or the speed record that it is so famous for. Is the update really worth it?

Sources tell us that the GT-R numbers have not been affected. In fact with the reprogram it was timed at 11.34 at 120.85 mph. This is a great time and is slightly higher when compared to the models built with the original launch control programming.

Cobra’s Nissan N+ Tuning Concept

Cobra Technology has finally released information and some much coveted pictures of the newly tuned Nissan GT-R. They have given it the name Cobra N+ Tuning Concept that has been equipped with a Stage One package. Included with this package is more power – which is not surprising when it comes to Cobra.

The new model will have an output of 550 horsepower with a torque of 500 pound-ft. With this kind of power built into it, it can rev from 0 to 62 mph in under 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 199 mph. Another piece of good news; they will be producing a race performance version that is expected to reach 620 horsepower and 590 pound-ft of torque.

Cobra has reprogrammed the ECU, modified the air intake, and increased the boost pressure by 0.15 bar in order to receive this extra power. It will also be built with a brand new free flowing stainless steel exhaust system and many more upgrades. They have already given it 21 inch lightweight rollers to help make room for the eight piston brake calipers and 15.9 inch discs in the front as well as coil over suspension features that are adjustable.

If you are going to tune up a model you can’t just stop at power. Which is why Cobra has also touched up the interior available in two options; leather and Alcantara or racing-specification carbon fiber seats complete with a roll cage. On the exterior they have given it a new front fascia – which will reduce the lift and improve cooling. It has also been given a remodeled rear with a larger wing and an integrated diffuser.

The new Cobra N+ tuning program will become available to consumers once the Nissan GT-R hit’s the UK market in early 2009. I bet there will be a waiting list for this model.

Nissan Adding And Removing Features On 2009 GT-R

We were disappointed to hear that Nissan will be dropping the launch control for the Nissan GT-R model. On the bright side though they will be adding on an additional five horsepower after giving it a few electronic tweaks. This will take it from 473 HP to 478 HP.

It will also be equipped with the Dunlop SP Sport 600 DSST tires. These are the same ones that were fitted onto the GT-R and helped it to reach its lap time of 7:29 around the ‘Ring. The Premium Edition GT-R will be given the rims in Gun Metal Grey and the Black Edition will be given the exact same wheels only in black.

One of the best changes that we are looking forward to is the interior color. For awhile Pearl White has been the color of choice. But who wants a car that seems a bit sterile? So now it is being replaced with a “deep” white known as Storm. We just hope that it is better and less boring.

If you want these new features you are going to have to wait a bit longer and pay £56,795. This is a 3.8% increase. For the Premium Edition you will add an extra £1,300 and for the Black Edition an extra £2,600. You won’t get your hands on the car until 2010.

Nissan Presents New Owner With GT-R At Nurburgring Track

Nissan has proven that the GT-R is the best supercar on the track with its 7:29 lap time and they have proven to the world that this lap time was not fabricated in any way. In order to brag a little more and to show new customers just how great it is they will be handing the car over to their owners on the famous Nurburgring track.

Nissan and Silverstone International racing school will be taking more then 1,300 European GT-R owners to the track and over 19 days they will be given a few tips on how to drive their new supercars. The program will be similar to one that is given to 500 British customers at Silverstone.

Nissan said that more then half of the new owners have already taken advanced driving courses and the majority said that they preferred the GT-R Academy driving course over them all. Maybe they can get a chance to hit the top speed at least while out on the track!

New Shots Of Nissan’s 370Z Convertible

Inside Line has a few spy shots of the new Nissan 370Z convertible. The convertible is still covered with a little bit of camouflage – but we assume that the coverings are going to come off in a few weeks. You can see that the camo is trying to hide the new back end and nose that they have redesigned for the new model.

Inside Line reported that the new Z will still use a power folding soft top instead of switching to the heavier mechanized hard top that many automakers have switched to using. But the soft top is much cheaper for them to use and it helps to keep the weight of the car down.

The car has been equipped with a 3.7 liter V8 engine. It also comes with a six speed manual and seven speed automatic gearboxes. The new 370Z convertible will be debuted during the 2009 New York Auto Show only a few months after the coupe has been debuted. It will go on sale shortly after that.

National Geographic Follows Production Of Nissan’s GT-R

National Geographic came up to Nissan more then four years ago and asked the automaker if they could do a documentary and follow them around through the process of developing a car. They wanted to be able to capture the whole process for its “Inside” series. Nissan said sure, “We’ve got something for you. It’s called the GT-R.”

So National Geographic’s crew was given an all access pass to Nissan’s top secret designs, manufacturing and engineering facilities and was there at the test track. Alongside them was Nissan’s CEO Carlos Ghosn. The whole documentary is 47 minutes long and talks about every detail that was put into the GT-R to make it come to life.

Obviously it skims over a few things and as with any television show it has been dramatized through certain parts of it. You have to make the process look a little bit interesting. But when you look past it you will find that it is very interesting to watch and makes you want to find a Nissan GT-R and take another look at the craftsmanship that was put into it.

Nissan Defends GT-R Against Porsche’s Accusations

It’s true that you can’t make history without someone coming to judge you on it and make sure that you did it fair and square. This was proved when Porsche accused Nissan of cheating their way to their 7:29:03 lap time around the Nürburgring track. Representatives for Porsche accused Nissan of using racing slicks to ensure that they would get a good lap time.

Obviously Nissan took great offense to this accusation – but decided not to get into a fist fight over it. Instead they calmly stated that, “The final word from us is that it was done on absolutely standard tires which are available to customers in the showroom. They’re not trick tires – absolutely standard tires, normal road tires.”

They went on to say that the time was reached by one of their fastest drivers Tochio Suzuki and was gained using the GT-R’s optional Dunlop tires. We are surprised and impressed by the way that Nissan is handling everything. We half expected them to prove them wrong and then gloat about how slow Porsche’s drivers are.

Cobb Tuning Adds More Power To Nissan R35 GT-R

Cobb Tuning has chosen to re-engineer the Acess Port control unit for the brand new R35 Nissan GT-R. The new Port will cost you $995 and will reflash the ECU to one out of six different tuning levels of your choice.

There are three levels each for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 1 can get you up to 63 additional ponies and 70 lb.-ft. of additional twist, while Stage 2 can boost the numbers by 70 and 90 respectively. The AccessPort can also save your stock ECU data and reflash it when you decide you’re finished with all that extra gumption.

According to a GT-R owner who tried it out, you can be blowing past all those regular GT-Rs in less than an hour. You can also store multiple engine mapping programs, remove trouble codes, install reduced-power valet and economy modes, and update maps over the Internet.
