FBI Refuses To Pay For Ferrari Joy Ride Gone Wrong

In the news this week is a story about an FBI joy ride gone horribly wrong, leaving a $750,000 Ferrari F50 trashed and an insurance company with the finger; middle finger that is. It seems that, even though the supercar was already impounded and safely stored, FBI Special Agent Frederick C. Kingston took an Assistant US Attorney for a ride and…

“Just a few seconds after we left the parking lot, we went around a curve, and the rear of the car began sliding,” Thompson wrote in an email to Managing Assistant US Attorney E.J. Walbourn on the day of the incident. “The agent tried to regain control, but the car fishtailed and slid sideways up onto the curb. The vehicle came to rest against a row of bushes and a small tree. Both myself and the agent exited of our own power.”

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) says their not liable for the damage done to the car while in their possession, insisting “sovereign immunity” protects them against negligence claims for damaged property detained by law enforcement.

This doesn’t make Motors Insurance Corp (MIC) happy, having already paid out 3/4 of a million dollars to the dealer where the car was stolen… waiting to get the car back from the Feds. They’ve tried using the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)to get documents outlining the storage and transport of the Ferrari – which of course the DOJ dismissed and denied based on it being “an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy”. Yeah, I bet it was.

It’s not everyday we here about an insurance company getting the shaft. We take for granted great car insurance companies like Aviva Car Insurance and Geico (and many others), depending on which side of the pond you’re on. Fortunately the dealer who had the 1995 F50 stolen got their money when it was stolen by a thief, but when the FBI steals your car… what do you do? Post your thoughts in the comments.

Test Mule For Ferrari F430 Caught On Camera

Some great shots of the test mule for the brand new Ferrari F450 have surfaced on the Internet thanks to the people at CzechFerrari.cz. They managed to get hold of some photos of the disguised Ferrari 599 Spider – something that we have been waiting some time for.

Ferrari usually uses the body panel’s from the previous model to help conceal the contours of the new vehicle from probing eyes. This is a good strategy to have because it leaves us with only simple pictures – but with nothing but guesswork to go on. However, things were different this time and caught more then we though possible.

These test mule gives us a great view at the bulk of the exterior body including its aluminum frame as well as the interior of the vehicle. The engine looks to house a twin clutch transmission and high mounted exhaust outlets. The front and rear fascias were missing.

The new Ferrari is replacing the F430 and is said to be debuting during the Frankfurt Auto Show sometime in September. There are also rumors that there will be a hybrid version that might show itself during the LA show only a couple of months after.

Ferrari Hybrid In The Works

Ferrari is one of the biggest names in the supercar industry and many of us respect the models that they produce. Each one is specifically engineered to offer us speed and comfort in one package. That package might cost quite a bit of money – which is why we are content to stand on the side lines and watch them from afar.

What we didn’t expect was to see Ferrari take a turn in the type of cars that they make. For a few months now we have been hearing rumors that they have been contemplating making a hybrid car. But it seems that they have taken the next step. In February the automaker filed for a patent for an all wheel drive sports car equipped with a hybrid propulsion.

According to the reports this design is supposed to “improve the drivability of a sports car in conditions of poor grip.” The question we are all asking ourselves now is how it will be able to help the environment with this particular Green technology that it is boasting about. For now that bit of information is not at the forefront.

Instead Ferrari is telling people about the four ways that they will be introducing this one of a kind sports car with its new technology. There are a total of six different diagrams that each have their own set of wheels that are designed to be powered by the vehicle’s internal combustion engine through the use of a locking differential. The other set of wheels will be powered through a single electric motor or two small in wheel electric motors.

Ferrari is hoping to make history with this new supercar by giving drivers the ability to use all wheel drive technology while having a low amount of weight to carry. It is possible that this car will go a step further and be completely electric power – which in turn will help to reduce the amount of fuel it will need and to lower the emissions it releases. We will provide more details as they are released and hope to see some exterior designs surface soon.

The Fastest, The Furthest And Everything In Between

We posted this on our Ferrari blog, but figured it was worth a post over here as well. Sure, it’s a commercial – but it’s cool and thus we’re gonna regurgitate on CSC. In case you’ve been under a rock for the last few years, Shell holds an annual Eco-marathon challenge that organizes some of the world’s most intelligent designers to build cars that go a very long way on a very little amount of fuel.

It’s done in partnership with Ferrari, and is great for the environment, F1 racing and the world in general. It’s great for car companies, because they’ll find new ideas and more paths to innovation. It’s great for mother nature and those global warming activists. They call it ‘the fastest, furthest and everything in between‘

This is perhaps the coolest Shell ‘commercial’ we’ve ever seen, and it clearly demonstrates Shell’s commitment to hosting the annual Eco-marathon challenge. This event highlights Shell’s technical partnership with Ferrari and brings many of the world’s smartest people together to design vehicles that run farther than ever, on the smallest amount of fuel.

Follow along as Shell’s involvement with the fastest, furthest and everything in between, clearly a fitting title. Did you know that one of these cars went 3,300 kilometers on the equivelant of 1 liter of fuel? That’s friggen amazing. Enjoy the video.

Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano To Be Given HGTE Package

The older a supercar becomes the more coveted it will be – but also the more behind the times it is. When it came to the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano the automaker wanted to make sure that it stayed in style by giving it a special retirement gift that no one would want to say not to – a HGTE handling package.

Ferrari gave the same thing to the 612 Scaglietti a couple of years ago and sources say that the 599 GTB is the next in line for it. However, Ferrari has not officially stated that this is the end of the line for the Fiorano. The fact that it has only been around three years leads many people to believe that it might have a few good years left in it.

The new package will be debuted on the Fiorano during the Geneva Motor Show. The H stands for ‘handling’, the GT stand for ‘gran turismo’, and the E stands for ‘evoluzione. The price for this new package will most likely cost an extra $25k. But with it you will get a retuned exhaust, upgraded spring rates, 20” modular tires with new rubber, revised anti roll bars, a brand new front grille, and extra carbon fiber pits in the front cabin.

Ferrari Working On Successor To F430

The good new is we have some information concerning the successor to the Ferrari F430. The bad news is that we only have a small bit of info. But it is enough to whet our appetites and keep us searching for more.

As we all know Ferrari does not produce concept cars often – but when they do they are able to produce a car better than the one before it. This new concept that has surfaced is no different. Sources tell us that it is expected to have certain green standards like that found on the Mille Chili concept and it will be in the mid-engine class.

We are expecting to see the new concept with a direct injection and dual-clutch transmission that we saw on the Ferrari California model. This will of course be connected to a regenerative brake system that they created with the help of their sister company – Mangeti Marelli.

For now it has been given the name F142. We hope that it changes into something better soon. We have heard that it might take on the F450 or F470 nameplate. However, this will depend on the displacement of the V8 engine. We are expecting the new supercar to be lighter than the 430 Scuderia mill. The model will hopefully show itself in full to us in October during the Frankfurt Auto Show.

Ferrari Enthusiasts Worry About Quality Of 2009 California

As more and more details and pictures are emerging concerning the 2009 Ferrari California many of us are concerned on whether or not it will be a true Ferrari. Many fear that it is straying away from the design and quality that we come to expect in a Ferrari.

Despite our fears and concerns Ferrari is adamant in saying that the 2009 California will be one of the best and will be a true Ferrari. It will have the ability to shoot from – 60 mph in a little over 3 seconds. It will also be equipped with a manual gearbox as well as the HGTC pack – which might just be enough to appease some of us.

The HGTC pack comes with tightened suspension and carbon-ceramic brake discs. Underneath the hood lies a 4.3 liter V8 engine that is placed in the front of the car. Ferraris are known for mid-mounting their engines. We might oversee this fact due to the fact that the engine can push out 460 horsepower.

It might yet prove itself worthy to all of us Ferrari enthusiasts. However, it will be hard to determine this fully until it is launched and we truly get to see them in action.

Lamborghini To Enter The Race

Lamborghini and Ferrari make similar supercars. At least to us they seem similar. They are both full of luxury and have the power that can send us to our destination in half the time if we could naturally go that fast.

However, there are certain differences. Lamborghini has never had the racing credentials and reputation that Ferrari has worked so hard to gain. This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance highlighted Lamborghini as a featured marque, and the guys over at Garage419 had a chance to talk with Stefan Winkelmann.

The Lamborghini CEO revealed that the company is preparing a full-on factory racing program, and though details are still a few weeks away. Winkelmann said the factory racing effort would start in Europe. Winkelmann also dispelled rumors of a potential RWD-only variant of the new Gallardo LP560-4, as well as a Superleggera version, saying that Lamborghini had no such plans for the time being.

Happy 50 Years Ferrari California Spyder

Many supercar and Ferrari enthusiasts believe that the 250 GT California Spyder is one of Ferraris most accomplished and well celebrated models. In fact many people can remember when it starred in the movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

This year is the 50th anniversary for the Spyder and it was celebrated during the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The celebration included giving the supercar its own class.

Six variations of the car were produced, all of which were displayed on the 18th fairway including the original prototype and a competition version that raced at both Sebring and Le Mans.

RM Auction Displays Million Dollar Ferraris

During the Monterey weekend is the RM classic and sports car auction. There was an incredible selection of cars along with a great turnout of people. One of the things that caught our eye were the many Ferraris that were sold over a million dollars.

No less than eight surpassed the million dollar mark capped by the $4.51 million dollar sale of a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB. Others breaking $1 million were a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 ($1,925,000), 1961 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Coupe Aerodinamica, and a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spyder ($1,485,000). A beautiful 1956 Ferrari 250 GT TDF Berlinetta had a top bid of $3.9 million but didn’t meet the reserve.
