We were disappointed to discover that BMW will not be delaying the production of the E92 M3 CSL – but will in fact be canceling it all together. We were expecting to see the final products of the car arrive in the summer of 2009. BMW had us all excited with talks of it being sharper and more light-weight when compared to the E92 M3 version.
It was also supposed to receive an upgrade in power between 450bhp and 470 bhp with a corresponding drop in weight, down by 100kg thanks to wider use of flyweight materials. Cup tires, new engine breathing and a carbonfibre airbox were due to complete the makeover.
BMW cancelled the car so that they can better focus their attention and resources on the faster versions of the X-badged crossovers. Ludwig Willisch, the new M Division boss, said: “Based on current numbers, there is most likely insufficient demand for the M3 CSL.”
